The sanctuary was all set for the wedding to begin.  The candles were lit, the guests were seated, and the music was playing.  In the bridal room, my bridesmaids and I prayed for one last time before we went out to walk down the aisle.

My mama helped me into my veil…

Then out we all filed of the bridal room, and into the hall behind the sanctuary.  I was half calm and half nervous to realize the moment had finally arrived!  As “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” began playing from inside, the mothers began walking down the aisle first.

One by one, the ladies walked down the aisle, till all of a sudden it was just me, my dad, and the wedding coordinator, and I kind of lost it! Oh my goodness!  I’m getting married *right now*!  I caught a glimpse of the sanctuary seating and it was absolutely packed!  There wasn’t a seat to be had! Later, my dad would tell me that the only way he kept from crying was to try to get me to stop crying myself! 😉

But the music schedule was no respecter of persons, so when I heard the “Trumpet Voluntary” begin I took a deep breath and tried to control my fluttering heart for the walk down the red carpet…

Then my mama stood up, and I was on my way down the most important walk of my life.

The bouquet was so heavy, and I was nervous I might trip on my dress since I had no free hands to help it “walk” down the aisle.

All around me, I caught glimpses of faces from all different times and places in my life – it was slightly overwhelming in the happiest of ways to realize that so many people who were a part of my life over the last 26 years had come to the same place to celebrate my wedding. <3  It was a little glimpse of heaven – all the people who were dear to you in one place, celebrating the happiest occasion of your life.

My Ivory and Gold Silk Wedding Gown

I’d stitched gold embroidered lace onto the front and back of the neckline, to tie in the “royal wedding Psalm” (Psalm 45) that I always knew I would want to incorporate into my wedding attire:

All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold.  In embroidered garments she is led to the king.”   So when selecting my gown materials, I made sure the embroidered organza skirt overlay and gold lace bodice trim were quite obvious in the gown design!  (You can read how I sewed my wedding gown here.)

Walking down the soft red carpet strewn with gold rose petals, I tried to focus entirely on the groom at the end of the aisle and not get distracted by the beaming faces and teary eyes all around me.  I had the feeling of being in a moment of history – everything was going so fast and yet so slowly at the same time.

Then my daddy gave me away, and I walked up with my groom to the stage where I would last bear the name of Casey…

Once on stage, I handed off my bouquet of peach roses to my matron of honor…  I could hear the rustle of silk behind me and I knew my bridesmaids were straightening out the tiers of lace ruffles on the train.  My soon-to-be-husband and I took hands and beamed at each other, and everyone in the audience seemed to fade away…  This. Was. Our. WEDDING!

The pastor welcomed everyone and asked them to remain standing for the singing of the hymn.  My father’s familiar voice and piano playing led us in worship, and by some miracle I made it through the hymn without sobbing.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father

There is no shadow of turning with Thee!

Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not

As Thou has been, Thou forever will be!

Great is Thy faithfulness, Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me!

bride-and-groom

The groom was singing with a gusto I’d never heard before.  It seemed more like an anthem than just a mere hymn.  I’ve seen a few hard things over the years, but the Lord has been faithful to me the whole way and blessed me more than I could have imagined!  Through every trial He has delivered me and I was just so joyful to stand up on that stage and proclaim His goodness to me!

Then began the wedding message.  I was just so happy!  I didn’t know it was possible to love someone that much before I met Lars.lars-and-katrina-wedding

The pastor spoke of the commitment we were making, and I tried to take in everything he was saying…

Not until later would I realize how much this looked like the “royal wedding” theme I’d always wanted. :)

Then we recited our solemn vows and exchanged rings.

And when our vows were completed the song “Jerusalem” (the British hymn played during the 2011 Royal Wedding), began booming through the sanctuary while we walked up to the table to sign our marriage certificate.  It felt so regal!  I didn’t realize my hand was shaking until I tried to sign my name and noticed it looked quite sloppier than normal. 😉

Lighting the unity candle…

Then we had a little surprise for our mothers.  Instead of returning back to our places on stage, we walked down to the front rows with two bouquets of roses, one for each mother. <3

And then my poor bridesmaids had to fix the gown all over again!  Believe me, this was one tricky wedding dress to straighten the train on, due to all those tiers of lace and chiffon ruffles.  I can just see the look on my matron of honor’s face – “Oh my, that train is going to need to be fixed!”. 😉

I’m SO thankful for my bridal party!  The girls were just absolutely gorgeous in their satin gowns, gloves, and elegant updos.  They looked even more stunning than I’d hoped!

At the close of the ceremony, the pastor prayed for us and for our marriage.

And then, “You may now kiss the bride”.

kiss-the-bride

This was the part of the show where the entire audience erupted in laughter, and I really didn’t know why!  It was a pretty straightforward kiss, and all things considered it was a short one! 😉  I bet it wasn’t even 6 seconds long.  I still don’t know what was so funny about it, but I’m glad people enjoyed it. :) Neither Lars nor I had ever kissed anyone before each other, so we’d only been kissing for about two months before we got married. I am SOOO glad we waited to kiss until we met the right person and were sure we were going to marry! <3

Then I heard the words I’d been waiting to hear all day long, “Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, Mr. & Mrs. Lars Holte!”

IMG_5987-2

The audience burst into applause so loud that I could hardly hear the recessional music!  I just laughed and laughed because I was so happy.  For me it felt like the pinnacle of my entire life to look out over the sanctuary filled with the people I knew and loved, and to stand there next to my now-husband and embark on this new season of life.  I’d never felt so joyful!!

When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy

Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them!”

The Lord HAS done great things for us, and we are filled with joy!

Now, since the von Trapp family’s story has played such a huge role in my life, it was only fitting that our wedding recessional was “The Overture and Preludium” from The Sound of Music! 😀

Down the aisle we strode in sheer happiness, and were followed by our wedding party.IMG_6040-2

It was marvelous!!  I can’t put into words how grand and glorious the occasion was, but I recently posted a wedding video on Youtube which you can watch here! :)

Next time I’ll share pictures of our stunning wedding reception in a gorgeous ballroom, but for now I’d like to thank our friends and family, my parents for throwing me the biggest wedding I could have hoped for, my husband Lars for being so sweet and wonderful, and especially the Lord for bringing us together in such an amazing way!  (Our relationship story is here.)  I’d also like to thank all of you readers who have been such an encouragement to me for the last 5 years!

May you all have a wonderful week!

Happy sewing and much love,

Katrina
